People suffer from a huge variety of fears and phobias, many of which may sound amusing to others! Whether your particular phobia is very common, such as flying, dogs, lifts, spiders, or slightly stranger, such as double-decker buses, jam, or polystyrene, it can have a huge impact on your life.
Phobias are all very similar.
All phobias are created when you experience a situation as threatening/stressful and react in a powerless and sometimes catastrophic way. You do not even need a real experience as they can be created entirely in your imagination. Even when the root of the problem is an actual experience it is still your thinking that maintains, and determines the severity of your fear. How you respond to any sort of emotional or traumatic experience depends very much on your sense of power and control, belief systems, and unhelpful thinking styles. After all, if you feel strong and in control you have nothing to be frightened about!
In industrialised countries between 10% and 40% of people are thought to have a fear of flying. In 2009 – 2010 there were 4.8 billion air passengers worldwide with only 817 fatalities. The vast majority of people with a fear of flying DON’T have it as a result of suffering some huge trauma in an aeroplane, indeed many have never flown. It follows that for these people it’s entirely down to their thinking.
The natural response to a phobia is to do all you can to avoid the thing or situation. This seems to make sense, BUT it reinforces the fear because every time you think about it you are making it BIGGER and STRONGER. When you interpret an event as external and unpredictable you feel powerless, and try even harder to gain some control. When you are frightened this only reinforces your feelings of powerlessness.
